Long-distance couples usually handle the big things well. There is a call on Sunday, a visit every few weeks, a countdown to the next trip. What gets lost is the ordinary day: the coffee you made, the awful parking job, the sky on the walk home.
Those moments are too small for a call and too many for a message thread, so most of them go unshared. A photo is a cheap way to share them. You do not have to explain anything. The other person looks at it and knows a little more about your Tuesday.
What a photo widget does
A photo widget puts the newest picture from someone on your phone's home screen. You do not open an app and you do not scroll. You unlock your phone, and there they are.
That changes how the habit feels. Messaging apps ask you to write something. With a widget you just send a picture, and the other person sees it whenever they next look at their phone. Nobody has to reply, and nobody is left on read.
What to look for in one
Not every photo widget app fits a couple. A few questions help:
- How fast does a photo arrive? A widget that shows yesterday's picture defeats the point.
- Is there a lock screen widget as well as a home screen one?
- Who can see your photos, and how does someone get added?
- Are there ads, or a login that needs your phone number?
- What happens to your photos when a free trial or plan ends?
How Framekin works
Framekin is an Android app by Senorit built around this one idea. You take a photo or a short video, pick who gets it, and tap send. A few seconds later it sits in their widget.
Setting up takes three steps. Put the Framekin widget on your home screen or lock screen. Connect with your partner by code or link. Then send. There is no feed, no followers and no strangers.
A few details that matter for two people far apart:
- Widgets come in several sizes for the home screen and the lock screen.
- A countdown widget counts down to your next trip or a birthday, so the next visit is always in sight.
- Reactions, replies and read receipts tell you the photo arrived. A buzz says "thinking of you" without a word, and you can unsend a photo you regret.
- It works offline. You can open the app, see your latest photos and queue what you want to send. It goes out when you are back online.
- If you get a new phone, sign in with Google and your account and friends come back.
Privacy, said plainly
Nobody can send you anything unless you added them. You connect through a personal code or link, and you do not need a phone number. There are no ads and no analytics services.
Photos and videos are stored in a private storage bucket in the EU, and only friends you added and have not blocked can fetch them. They are not end-to-end encrypted, so we want to be straight about that. If you need that level of protection for a picture, do not send it through Framekin.
There is an app lock with fingerprint, face or PIN as well.
What it costs
New customers get a 14-day free trial of Plus and Max. After that Framekin needs a plan through Google Play.
Plus costs €5.99 a month or €59.90 a year. It adds videos up to 10 seconds, week and month recaps and more widget and stamp styles. Max costs €9.99 a month or €99.90 a year and adds full-resolution photos, 30 second video, a 365-day recap and priority support. Euro prices include VAT, and Google Play shows the price in your currency before you confirm.
We remind you two days before the trial ends, and you can cancel any time in Google Play. If a plan ends, your photos and friends stay and wait for you. You can also give Framekin as a gift, for one month or twelve.
Getting the most out of it as a couple
This part is our opinion, not a rule. Send the boring things. A photo of your lunch says more about your week than a carefully chosen picture does. Skip the pressure to send one every day. A widget works best when sending feels like nothing, and a streak you feel guilty about turns it into homework.
Set the countdown for your next visit, and agree on one small thing each of you will photograph this week. It does not need to be more than that.
