What is a microadventure?
A microadventure is a small task outdoors, close enough to fit inside a short walk, no big trip, no gear. Glenby suggests one or two a day, matched to the season and your area, and a photo with place and timestamp honestly shows you were there.
How much time outside per day or week is good for you?
As little as 10 minutes outside shows a measurable effect, and around 120 minutes a week is considered the wellbeing threshold (White et al., 2019 study). A daily microadventure on Glenby doesn't need hours at a time to fit inside that.
Why doesn't Glenby plan routes for long hikes?
Because that's not the problem Glenby is trying to solve. Instead of planning long tours, Glenby focuses on small, recurring occasions right outside your door. Our own page on the microadventure principle explains exactly how that works.
How does GPS photo proof work in Glenby?
You take a photo on the spot, Glenby reads location and timestamp automatically. No uploading old photos, no exceptions, no manual approval. That keeps the proof honest without anyone needing to police it.
What happens if I miss a day in my streak?
The day streak on Home counts the days in a row on which you finished a task. Weekends never break it, and today counts as soon as you finish. If you miss a weekday, Glenby saves it for you once a month; you earn more saves through your weekly streak. Without a save, the day streak starts again. The weekly streak counts weeks in a row with at least one finished task, so single days off never touch it.
Does Glenby have a leaderboard?
No. There's no global leaderboard and no comparison with strangers. Progress is personal or, for two-person microadventures, shared only with people you invite yourself.
Does Glenby use AI to identify plants or animals?
Only to check your task photo, not to identify species. Before you submit a photo, small image-recognition models on your device check whether it roughly fits the task, for example whether a bird photo shows a bird. If it doesn't, the app asks you to retake it. Glenby won't name the species for you: what you observe and note down stays your own observation. The photo doesn't leave your device for this.
Is Glenby GDPR compliant, and where is data hosted?
Yes. The database is hosted with Cloudflare with a Western Europe location hint and no read copies in other regions; storage exclusively within the EU is not guaranteed. Encrypted photos and voice notes are stored with Cloudflare as well (contracting entity in the US, safeguarded by EU Standard Contractual Clauses), and chat delivery runs on the same infrastructure. There's no selling to ad networks, and the full list of processors is in the privacy policy.
How does end-to-end encryption work for notes?
Notes you write in Glenby are encrypted on your device before they reach Glenby's servers. Only you and the person you share with can read them, we can't.
What do disappearing messages do?
Disappearing messages delete messages only on devices running a current version of Glenby. They do not stop someone from taking a screenshot.
What is the minimum age for Glenby?
18+: you confirm your age at signup. Shared content is moderated, and profiles and messages can be reported anytime with one tap.
How fast is a deletion request handled?
GDPR requires a response within one month (Art. 12 GDPR). In practice, we process deletion requests through our deletion page considerably faster.
Is Glenby free? What do Glenby+ and Glenby+ Duo cost?
Glenby is free to use from day one. Glenby+ and Glenby+ Duo build on top of that, optional, monthly or yearly, all prices include VAT.
Can I switch between pricing tiers?
Yes, anytime. Switching runs through the subscription management in the app (the billing portal of our payment provider Stripe), no need to cancel and sign up again.
Where does the term microadventure come from?
British adventurer Alastair Humphreys coined the term: a short, local outing, no big planning or gear required. The full origin and philosophy behind it is on our page about the microadventure principle.
Is there scientific evidence that short nature moments help?
Yes. A study by White et al. (2019, Scientific Reports) found that around 120 minutes a week in nature is considered the wellbeing threshold, spread across several short moments rather than one long trip. More on our nature and wellbeing page.
Is Glenby available on iOS?
Not yet. iOS is in progress. You can join the waitlist and get a one-time message when it launches, Android is already available on Google Play.
Do I need a credit card to try Glenby?
No. The Base tier works without any payment details. Only when you switch to Glenby+ or Glenby+ Duo does payment run securely through our payment provider Stripe; the app never stores payment details.
